US heavy tank M-26 Pershing by Gaso.line Planned as the successor of the M4 Sherman, 1,436 M26 Pershing tanks have been produced from November 1944 to June 1945 by a subsidiary of General Motors (1,190 units) and Chrysler in Detroit Michigan (246 units). The M26 represented a fair trade-off between the protection (max. armour: 4.5 in.), the fire power and the mobility (although underpowered with the GAF 6002B V-8 liquid cooled ford engine that yielded 500 hp). It weighed 42 tons. The crew of five could operate the M3 90 mm cannon with 70 shells and three machine-guns: two M1919A4 Browning .30 cal. (coaxial and hull) with 5,000 cartridges and one AA M2-HB Browning .50 cal. (550 rounds) fitted on top of the turret for lo-flying targets. The successful M26 made its combat debuts in early 1945 vs. the IIIrd Reich's armies; the 200 tanks deployed fought in a satisfactory manner. Some were shipped in the Pacific Zone to fight for the battle of Okinawa. Its career prolonged during 50's (US Army and export).
