The FAMO Co. designed a SP gun with the chassis of the PzKpfw. II and the 105 mm light-howitzer "leichte Feldhaubitze 18". The "Wespe" -wasp was 4.81 m long, 2.28 m wide and 2.30 m high. The howitzer, that had been engineered by the Rheinmetall Co. weighted 1,985 kg and fired a 14.8 kg shell with a max. range of 10.675 km and a muzzle velocity of 470 m/s. 32 rounds were ready for use in the "Wespe". The ubiquitous MG 34 machine-gun fulfilled the self-defence of the vehicle. Thus to be used in conjunction with the 682 units produced between 1943 and mid-1944, 158 ammo-carrier "Wespe" (unarmed version) have been delivered to the Wehrmacht. Potent and easy to operate, the "Wespe" gained a great popularity amongst its owners. When deployed up to five batteries of six "Wespe" each equipped a battalion.
