The M-12 was one of the earliest WWII SP guns. A WWI Model M1917 or M1918 155 mm cannon was fitted onto the M3 tank chassis. A fighting compartment was accommodated by moving the engine forward. In addition to the weapon, the rear part of the hull received a spade that was lowered to the ground before firing to compensate the recoil. Due to shortages in the 155 mm inventories, only about 100 of these armoured fighting vehicles have been produced. A 10 to 25 mm thick armour protected the crew of six. By providing a potent and mobile fire-support for the Allied forces the dreadful M-12 displayed its true value. Up to 6 feet of concrete could even be pierced owing to the awesome 155 mm gun firepower.
