Les Montreal Locomotion Works achevèrent en juin 1941 le prototype du char Ram en réponse à la demande émise par le Canadian Armoured Corps. Ce véhicule de fabrication canadienne reprenait le châssis du M3 Grant US en intégrant un haut de caisse en acier coulé, modifié pour accommoder une tourelle également de conception locale pivotant à 360°. Ainsi, de fin 1941 à juillet 1943, 50 Ram I et 1899 Ram II furent construits. Les améliorations du Ram II consistaient en une meilleure suspension, un embrayage plus fiable, une caisse au dessin simplifié par la suppression de diverses trappes et surtout un armement principal plus puissant : un canon de 6 livres. L'emport en munitions était de 92 obus de 6 livres et 4000 cartouches de 7,62 mm pour les trois mitrailleuses. Le Ram COPV -véhicule de commandement et d'observation- fut livré à 84 exemplaires. Il s'agissait d'un Ram II de fin de production doté d'un équipement radio idoine. De manière à ne pas attirer l'attention sur le rôle réel de ce char, un canon factice en bois remplaçait celui de 6 livres. En action, les Ram COPV accompagnaient les automoteurs d'artillerie Sexton.

TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS
The answer to a Canadian Armoured Corps request, was the Ram tank which prototype was rolled-out by the Montreal Locomotion Works in June 1941. This Canadian built vehicle used the chassis of the US M3 Grant tank onto which was integrated a modified casted steel hull top that accommodated a locally designed turret that could rotate 360°. As of late 1941 until July 1943: 50 Ram I and 1,899 Ram II have been manufactured. The improvements of the Ram II were a simplified hull design by removing some hatches, an improved suspension, a more reliable clutch, and above all a greater firepower: a 6-pound gun. The ammo load was: 92 6-pound shells and 4,000 rounds for the three cal. .30 machine-guns. 84 units of the Ram COPV -Command and Observation Post Vehicle- were supplied. It was basically a late production Ram II fitted with an adequate radio gear. A wooden dummy-gun was fitted in place of the original cannon to camouflage the special role of this vehicle. The Ram COPV used to be associated with the Sexton SP guns.
