En réaction à l'apparition fin 1916 des premiers chars britanniques, l'Armée Impériale obtint l'A7V. Une centaine de tanks fut commandée, seulement 20 exemplaires furent livrés par Daimler-Benz à partir d'octobre 1917.
Ce char de 30 tonnes était mû par deux moteurs Daimler-Benz d'une puissance unitaire 100 cv lui permettant une vitesse maximale sur route de 10 km/h. Le blindage variait de 20 à 30 mm d'épaisseur. L'armement de l'A7V ne comptait pas moins de six mitrailleuses Maxim de 7,92 mm approvisionnées à 36 000 coups, un lance-flammes et un canon à tir rapide de 57 mm doté de 180 obus . Le nombre maximum d'occupants atteignait 18 membres d'équipage.
Le baptême du feu de l'A7V eut lieu dans l'Aisne à Saint-Quentin, fin mars 1918. Bien que supérieur aux chars français et britanniques sous bien des aspects, un manque de fiabilité mécanique et une faible capacité de franchissement des tranchées empêchèrent l'A7V de s'imposer sur le champ de bataille.

TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS
Late 1916 appeared the first British tanks. As a reaction the Imperial Army obtained the A7V. 100 tanks have been ordered but only 20 have been supplied by Daimler-Benz as of October 1917.
This 30 Metric Tons tank was powered by two Daimler-Benz engines yielding 100 hp each. A road top-speed of 10 km/h could be reached. The armour's thickness ranged from 20 to 30 mm. The armament of the A7V was made up six 7.92 mm Maxim machine-guns supplied with 36,000 cartridges, a flame-thrower and a 57 mm rapid-firing gun with 180 shells. Up to 18 soldiers manned this vehicle.
The A7V first saw action in the Aisne at Saint-Quentin late March 1918. Although superior under many aspects to its French and British opponents, a mechanical unreliability and a poor capacity to cross the trenches hindered this armoured fighting vehicle from asserting itself on the battlefield.
