Souhaitant disposer d’un véhicule léger, mobile, doté d’une très grande autonomie et adapté au théâtre d’opérations d’Afrique du Nord, l’armée italienne commanda 200 AS 42 à l’industrie transalpine. Les deux versions confondues, la production totalisa 300 exemplaires. Prévue pour transporter six hommes et leurs équipements, l’AS 42 était armée de une à trois mitrailleuses Breda de 8 mm. L’armement lourd pouvait être soit une mitrailleuse lourde Breda de 20 mm, soit un canon anti-char de 47 mm ou un fusil anti-char de 20 mm. L’AS 42 servit en Libye, en Sicile et même sur le front de l’Est puis termina sa carrière en Italie dans les années 50.

The Italian army ordered 200 of this light, multi-purpose long ranged fighting vehicle, well adapted to the North African theatre of operations to the local industry. The global production of both types amounted to 300 units.
Designed to board six men and their gears, the AS 42 was fitted with one to three 8 mm Breda machine-guns. The heavy weapon mount could be a 20 mm Breda heavy machine-gun or a 47 mm anti-tank gun or a 20 mm anti-tank rifle.
The Sahariana saw action in Libya, Sicily and even on the eastern front then ended its career in Italy in the fifties.
